It does not get much better than this.
The site is organized into various galleries, including an Artistic Gallery (where the above Art Deco image of Detroit is located), a Literary Gallery, and my personal favorite, the Historical Gallery. The galleries each have an organizing essay, and each book in the gallery has extensive notes as well as high quality photos of the bindings.
Hours will be spent.

Richard Minsky published a small selection from the collection in "The Art of American Book Covers: 1875-1930", published last year. It's really hard to find examples in good condition in used book stores as the bindings are usually quite worn over time by use.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'd seen the Minsky volume in the gallery shop attached to the Frick, and I've been coveting it since. The ones he has selected are absolutely gorgeous, and really give you a feel for what the bindings must have looked like when first published. In a way it's nice to contrast these with the ones you'll find in the used book stores, see the passage of time and the wear of use.
ReplyDeleteThanks again for the recommendation: this definitely makes me more covetous, to the point that I might turn to action and actually make a purchase.
